HE! again,

Sometimes here in the Eastern US where I live, people ask me if the Lenape are part of the Delaware or vise versa. This Eastern woodland tribe called themseves LENAPE, which can be translated into "THE People" a self-designation that many tribes have used. DELAWARE is the name the English (in the 1600's) gave the Lenape when an English explorer re-named their river : the Lenapewihituck : (river of the people) into "de la Warre" River (which got slurred into DELAWARE. The sea captain and explorer was trying to get ibto the good graces of his boss, the Royal Gov. of the Virginia Colony: Sir Thomas West. One of the Gov's titles was Lord De La Warre. The name Delaware got stuck on the people who lived near there. SO, when you're talking about this Eastern Woodland Tribe: Lenape OR Delaware means the same people!! WANISHI!
