Does anybody know anything about the Esopus who lived in southern New York state? I've read that the last of the Esopus were displaced from that area by the 1830's yet my family had been living there as far back as the 1850's. I have great-uncles who were farmers in that area as recently as the 1930's as well. I've recently taken a trip up there to trace any possible family down, but the locals don't know a thing about the areas native origins (or more likely don't care to acknowledge them). I have several pictures of my family dating back then, specifically of crews of native men working for the D&H Canal Co. Does anyone know if any Esopus stayed in that area or could these people have been Mohawk or Oneida who came down looking for job or land prospects?
