It has long been known that the name applied to the Native people who lived along the Delaware River was taken from the title of an Englishman, Lord de la Warr

The most commonly accepted source for the name Delaware comes from an English Lord named de la Warr, aka Sir Thomas West. The Lenape interpretation is that of a misunderstood description of a Lenape word by Swiss colonists.
